We are proud to announce the successful conclusion of the UBA Foundation National Essay Competition (NEC) 2023. This year’s competition witnessed the exceptional talent and dedication of students across Uganda, and we are thrilled to recognize their achievements.
A total of twelve brilliant students earned their spot in the finals of the essay competition, and the top three contestants were honored at a prestigious award ceremony held at our UBA Head Office on Friday, October 27, 2023.
Mugisa Alvin from Princess High School emerged as the overall winner and was awarded a brand new laptop, along with a cash prize of UGX 3.5 million. The first runner-up, Akori Martha from Tororo Girls School, and the second runner-up, Tusiime Allan from Exodus College School, were also celebrated for their outstanding contributions to the competition. Akori and Tusiime both received brand new laptops.
The UBA Foundation National Essay Competition is a platform that attracted students from schools all over Uganda. Their essays were meticulously evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges, consisting of esteemed Professors from renowned Ugandan Universities.
Chioma Mang, Managing Director of UBA Uganda, emphasized the importance of effective communication in all aspects of life. She highlighted how this competition serves as a catalyst for students, instilling in them the confidence to express themselves and enhancing their writing skills. “We run this essay because we also believe that communication is key in everything that you do. We do it to give them (learners) the confidence to express themselves and to build their confidence and writing skills,” she said.
Ismail Mulindwa, Director of Basic and Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education, commended initiatives like the essay competition for their role in helping students develop essential skills. He emphasized that such competitions empower students to learn how to read, write, and be assertive, ultimately preparing them for a successful future. “Some students cannot apply for jobs because they are not trained, but if we have such competitions, they learn how to write, read, and be assertive. As the ministry, we support such initiatives to go ahead,” he said.
The UBA Foundation National Essay Competition, launched in 2022, is part of UBA Uganda’s commitment to fostering education and equipping senior secondary students with strong communication skills to excel in their professional journeys. This competition serves as a competitive platform that enhances the intellectual and writing abilities of senior secondary school students in Uganda.
